Rebecca and I went to the symphony at the Roy Thompson Hall this weekend and listened to the TSO play Brahms' 2nd Symphony. Before the intermission however, they played a Canadian composer's peice (It was okay) followed by a Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker (who was amazing).
The real story though, was during the intermission when I left to grab a drink of water. (backstory) When I was in high school, the band went to hear the TSO play with Yo Yo Ma, where we were introduced to Mr Nick's friend, Ivan Something-or-other, (a second violinist in the orchestra). Rachel might remember the guy with the ponytail.
Anyway, I was in line to buy a rediculously over priced bottle of water (the drinking fountain ran out of cups believe it or not) and I recognized Ivan in line behind me. Turns out he wasn't playing that night because he strained his wrist playing squash. I reintroduced myself to him, told him how I knew who he was, and we got talking. Long story short, he invited Rebecca and I to the after party with the orchestra. It was amazing.
It was at this huge room in the InterContinental Hotel, where the Canadian pianist (Jon) was staying. These people may look stuffy, but after a few glasses of whatever they were drinking, the bow ties came off, so to speak.
Highlight of the night; When Jon played Black Dog (Led Zeppelin) on the baby grand. You've never heard Zeppelin until you hear it done by a concert pianist.

oh crazie Ivan... he sure is crazie and excentric and very much a people person. That's so great that you got to go to the party. I remember when Ivan took me to meet Yo Yo Ma in his dressing room... definetly a highlite of my short life! Go Ivan!

Apparently I was drugged during most of this evening... I remember going to the symphony and Jon getting water... hmmmm...
